LANGKAWI : The Defence Ministry witnessed the signing of contracts and agreements worth more than RM3.7bil at the 14th Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace (Lima 2017) exhibition.
There were 12 memorandums of understanding (MoUs), 11 contracts, seven letters of agreement and five letters of intent signed.
Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the value marked an increase of 81% from RM2.04bil in Lima 2015 to RM3.71bil this year.
"This is a testament to the success of Mindef in pursuing a collaborative approach with our industry partners as outlined by the transformational HalaTujuMindef.
"Modernising the Malaysian Armed Forces, whilst mindful of continuing global economic challenges, remains a top priority for Mindef and the Malaysian Government as highlighted by the Prime Minister two days ago," he said at a press conference after witnessing the signing ceremonies.
Among the companies which signed were Boustead Naval Shipyard, Seicom System Sdn Bhd, Aerospace Technology System Corp Sdn Bhd (ATSC), Europrop International, GmbH (EPI), Pilatus Aircraft Limited, Airbus Military Sociedad Limitada, Airod Sdn Bhd, and Destin Prima Sdn Bhd.
On Lima 2019, Hishammuddin said he would like to see increased participation from the Transport Ministry.
"There should be equal focus from both Mindef and the Transport Ministry.
"The goal is to see a 50% and 50% participation from Mindef and Transport Ministry.
"But whether this is achievable depends on whether the stakeholders and the industries will come forward.
"There is only so much the Government can do," he added.
